In 2000, the AWHI in conjunction with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Public History Program sponsored "A Gathering of Women." This multi-media project, the most comprehensive project on Arkansas women's history, includes a traveling exhibit, supplementary web site, and hard copy bibliography. The project captured the diversity of Arkansas women by examining the history of all women, not specifically the "exceptional" women.
By distributing questionnaires across the state and using the responses to tell the story, the project team was able to incorporate the history of ALL women. Photographs and text captured the many roles women have played in Arkansas’ history. The exhibit, sponsored in part by grants from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities, is available through the Humanities Council’s resource center. Other project sponsors include the Arkansas Community Foundation, Historic Arkansas Museum Foundation board, Mary Wohlleb, and many individual donors.
Traveling Exhibits
The traveling exhibit, "A Gathering of Women: Arkansas Women 1930-2000," is available to institutions statewide through the Arkansas Humanities Council. The exhibit consists of six folding panels that, when assembled, form three panels measuring approximately 8 ft. in height by 10 ft. in width. Once the exhibit is assembled, the plastic panels easily attach with Velcro. Extensive instructions and photographs are included. The exhibit travels in four rectangular cases and one round case and can be easily shipped across the state. Since it's debut, the exhibit has traveled Arkansas extensively, including Hot Springs, Texarkana, Searcy, Springdale, and sites in Little Rock.
To schedule the exhibit contact the Arkansas Humanities Council at (501) 320-5761. Speakers on Arkansas Women's History can be arranged by contacting Dr. Johanna Miller Lewis at (501) 569-3216 or arwomen@ualr.edu.
Another traveling exhibit on Arkansas women's history, "Women of the Central High Crisis: The Politics of Gender and Desegregation" is also available to institutions around the state. Approximately 23 feet in length and 4 feet wide, arrangements to bring the exhibit to your school, library, or museum can be made through Julienne Crawford at the Arkansas History Commission at (501) 682-6900. The History Commission staff will come and set up the exhibit for your institution.
